[Feedback] User Titles
#1
So, I've had an idea I've been mulling about for a while now. If you look to the user field next to each post, you will find the user name, avatar, and a whole bunch of other things. Amongst them is a user title, located between the user name, and avatar. Unless you have set your own custom title, it will show a title based on your post count.

The following list shows the current title ranks:

0-9 posts: Newborn Foal
10-49 posts: Cutie Mark Crusader
50-149 posts: Earth pony
150-249 posts: Unicorn
250-499 posts: Pegasus
500-999 posts: Alicorn

This wasn't something I set up, but regardless, I don't really like it for three reasons. Firstly, it's unoriginal. Every single MLP-related forum uses the same titles, or some variant of it. Secondly, the rankings imply certain races are 'better' than others. Not really a major issue, since it's just some silly title, but still. Thirdly, since we are slowly starting to grow in size, we will need to adjust the titles at some point, anyway.

So, I'm open to suggestions on new user titles. It would have to be related to MLP, distributed computing, or folding (specifically, what it studies; proteins), and would need a minimum of 5 titles. The more, the better. I've had the following idea:

Unzipped DNA: 0-50 posts
RNA Strand: 51-100 posts
Amino Acid: 101-500 posts
Unfolded Protein: 501-1000 posts
Fully Assembled Protein: 1001-5000 posts

So here, I have it focusing on a developing protein, which I believe fits well with what B@H started out as. Perhaps the importance of proteins in the grand scheme of things will diminish, as we continue to expand and spread out into other projects. But that's for me to worry about. I'd like to hear your opinions and any possible suggestions on other titles.

I like the pony one because its more descriptive... except unicorn and pegasus should be swapped.

Why not use processor types?

0-50 posts - Vacuum Tube
51-100 posts - Logic Chip
101-500 posts - Pentium
501-1000 posts - Athlon
1001-5000 posts - Elbrus

thats not a bad idea, though it shouldent be anything related to intel or AMD...

0 - 15 posts - Vacuum Tube
16 - 50 posts - transister
51 - 100 posts - 555 timer
101 - 250 posts - microcontroller
251 - 500 posts - embedded system
501 - 750 posts - pathetic processor
751 - 1000 posts - desktop processor
1001 - 2000 posts - server processor
2001 - 5000 posts - multi-processor system
5001 - infinity - super computer

or something

Not a bad idea. I don't think people would like 'pathetic processor', though!

I actually quite like the current ones...
Here's a few alternate ideas - they all kinda suck but maybe can help someone else come up with something decent

Nucleus
Atom
Functional Group
Amino Acid
Protein

Instruction
Snapshot
Frame
Work Unit
Generation
Run
Project

Foal
Blank flank
Background pony
Mane pony
Alicorn

I'm up for tiwake's suggestion, minus a few of the stupider ones.

Okay, if I combine my idea, with RoBorg's first suggestion, this looks quite decent to me:

Atom: 0-9 posts
Nitrogenous Base: 10-49 posts
Nucleotide: 50-99 posts
RNA Strand: 100-499 posts
Amino Acid: 500-999 posts
Unfolded Protein: 1000-1999 posts
Fully Assembled Protein: 2000+ posts

Tiwake's one, with edits:

Vacuum Tube
Transistor
Microcontroller
Desktop Processor
Server Processor
Multi-Processor
Supercomputer

Same post ranges as the first.

Ideas? Suggestions? Amendments? Votes?

Only problem is that 2000 is fairly easily achieved, we'd need to have a few above that.

It has taken me 8 months for get 1000, and the next poster is...what? 350?. I'm sure we can make adjustments to the ranges later on when need be. That's an inevitable change.

If need be, the 1000-1999 range can be extended to 4999.

Add Integrated Circuit in there...

Vacuum Tube
Transistor
Integrated Circuit
Microcontroller
Desktop Processor
Server Processor
Multi-Processor
Supercomputer

Cant really think of any others to add at the moment

I would personally prefer Valve (or Thermionic Valve) instead on Vacuum Tube

Although they refer to the same thing, Valves (or Vacuum Tubes) were first used in Computers at Bletchley Park in the UK during the 2nd World War in the code breaking computers (such as Colossus) and they referred to them as Valves.

I can suggest that, in the future you could add levels above it (as well as higher requirements for a given level if needed).

For example, above "Fully Assembled Protein" you could add things that are types of protein, like "Enzymes", "Keratin", etc. This is rather awkward though. You could refer to things that are made with proteins, in increasing complexity instead though. Like "Single Cell", "Multi-cell", etc.

With the computer one, you could add on known supercomputers (Like "Titan") in order of power, and changed as time goes on to reflect the publicly known ones. On Researching this, I found (not really surprisingly) that all the top computers use Linux. Well, it's flexible and all, so again it's not surprising. You could also refer to famous computers in history (like the Colossus Spazturtle mentioned).

I can do that, but I'll remove the Multi-Processor, just to keep both variants of titles at the same amount.

Now, if no one has any suggestions for a third set of user titles, I'll wait a few days, then make a poll for you guys to vote on.
